Growth is a combination of having great product-market-fit (PMF) and being at the right place at the right time. But once you get there, going after product-led growth where retention goals are just as important as acquisition goals will differentiate the products that stick around for longer from those that don’t.

  1. Good product companies love their products, but great product companies are obsessed with their users.

  2. Data is everything but only if you know what you're looking for. Start with discovery and research, and refine based on evidence. Once you have enough data, pick the metrics that matter to your stage of business and monitor progress along the way.

  3. Your priorities will shift based on your product’s evolution so make sure you update KPIs based on what you learn along the way.

  4. Early customers are your allies. Keep them close and listen to what they have to say.

  5. Nobody cares about your brand till you give them a reason to care. Once you find that reason, use it to build a community.

  6. Paid marketing is tempting to taste early success but it's a bubble.

  7. There is a lot to learn from your customers, but there’s also a lot to learn from the ones that ‘almost made it’.

  8. Listen to your customers everywhere. Be on the prowl for feedback and talk to them if you can, whenever you can.

  9. Have allies on every function (product, marketing, sales, customer success) and band together to ensure you're speaking the same language even after users leave your website.

  10. Don't scour competitor websites to (only) find out what they’re saying. Keep a track of their pulse but be brave enough to offer your own unique perspective to your audience. They’ll respect and love you more for it.
